INTERNATIONAL PRESENTATIONS (NON PROFIT)

1997 - 2001Laparoscopic Program, Hospital San Juan de Dios,
  San Jose, Costa Rica

The program has consisted of five on-site visits, four to the Hospital San Juan de Dios, a teaching hospital of the University of Costa Rica and the last one to the Hospital de Guapiles.
The first two visits consisted in developing the laparoscopic cholecystectomy capability of general surgeons.  During the second visit the use of the Harmonic Dissector was demonstated during a laparoscopic adrenalectomy.
The third visit was part of a course on advanced laparoscopy where two laparoscopic surgeons from Mexico, one from the U.S.A. and myself were the faculty.  Laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication and Inguinal Hernia repair were the main focus of the course  sponsored by the Servicio de Cirugia 1 y Unidad de Cirugia Laparoscopica of the Hospital San Juan de Dios, which was part of the Congreso Nacional de Medicina,.
The fourth visit  was sponsored by Medical Training Worldwide (MTW), a non profit organization, which provided not only material support in the way of equipment donation but also provided the experience and expertise of Horacio Asbun, M.D., a member of the Board of MTW and an expert in advanced laparoscopy.  This visit was specifically designed to train three surgeons from the Hospital de Guapiles, a rural hospital in Costa Rica, on the technique of laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
The last (fifth)visit took place from March 27 trough March 31, 2000, and the training in laparoscopic cholecystectomy was completed and carried out at  the Hospital de Guapiles.  Four surgeons were fully trained in the technique and have become elligible for SAGES certification.
